Can this therapy be used during an episode of depression, or one has to control it first?

Quick advice. Learn to live in the now moment. Living in past thoughts is depression. Living in the future thoughts is anxiety. Both those states of mind are an illusion. Be rooted in he now.
To answer your question, yes it will help.

You can live in the moment and be miserable or have a totally blunted affect and no energy.
There is a lot more to mood disturbances than thinkng about the past or the future too much.
