Huge at the time of its publication, this, along with its author, have been since proven a fraud. For a picture of how twisted this cult leader later became, read Sorcerer’s Apprentice: My Life with Carlos Castaneda, by Amy Wallace.

wow, disinformation campaign reach even here in comments. It wasn’t proven as a fraud, quite contrary it is all real. Everything is real in Castaneda’s books, they are real characters and every technique written works. You can even practice it yourself, it will still work. They guys who started this “proven a fraud” campaign are confirmed scientologists, who were afraid that people start leaving their useless scientology sect for the real thing and they lose influence/money. They were losing real money and audience in LA and they even stalked Castaneda. Everything about that “proven a fraud” junk was a deliberately created lie by charlatans.
And the books themselves are still huge, not just at the time of publication. They show the real working magical system of mages of ancient Mexico. Which can be practiced by anyone with great results.
