This seemingly dualistic view, brings to mind and perhaps stands in contrast not only to recent neuroscience but also to Arthur Koestler’s matter-of-fact particular holistic view - called “holonic” view - which views as relevant not so much the connection between “elements” as their inclusion in others.
“Every holon has the dual tendency to preserve and assert its individuality as a quasi- autonomous whole; and to function as an integrated part of a larger whole. This polarity between the Self-Assertive and Integrative tendencies is inherent in the concept of hierarchic order; a universal characteristic of life.” (Koestler, The Ghost in the Machine, 1967)
