Like many physicians, Dr. Terry Wahls focused on treating her patients’ ailments with drugs or surgical procedures - until she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2000. Within three years, her back and stomach muscles had weakened to the point where she needed a tilt-recline wheelchair. Conventional medical treatments were failing her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life.
Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology, and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. Dr. Wahl’s adopted the nutrient-rich paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of neuromuscular stimulation. First, she walked slowly, then steadily, and then she biked 18 miles in a single day. In November 2011, Dr. Wahls shared her remarkable recovery in a TEDx talk that immediately went viral. Now, in The Wahls Protocol, she shares the details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms, get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to share the Wahls Protocol with others suffering from the ravages of multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.

She did a Reddit AMA. Sorry, but she sounds like a quack who wanted to sell books. She does answer some tough questions, but her answers are less than enlightening:

She solved her own problems with her methods so thats better then most who just treat ppl when they never had a problem. She is a smart women and you can find her on many health podcast if you need to hear her story in her own voice….heads up it about eating healthy food make you feel better lol. I’m a health coach…She is not a quack! I have used a slightly tweaked version of her protocol to help 12 autoimmune clients alleviate and even reverse their disease. I live in MN and in just in last 4 months 2 clients, both with severe RA, who see the same Dr. at Mayo in Rochester, MN have gone off all of their meds including their monthly infusions (low chemo which is how they met)! I started helping helping one and the other signed up. I have my clients use her book as a frame of reference, source of knowledge and inspiration. My program is much stricter for the first 3 months, depending on how they respond. I have also helped my cousin control her crohn’s so she could get through medical school. If she can do it while in medical school anyone can do it. If you try this you can not “cheat” until your symptoms are under control and then only with caution. http://www.wholeplate.com

At the very least, her methods are not very well insured against bias or experimenter effects. The work she’s published in some (not great) journals has very low Ns, and also relies upon self-reported testimony rather than any objective markers of change. If i was her I’d have been rushing off to do a decent, randomised controlled study on this, because if it’s true it’s really fascinating stuff. Instead…she rushed off to get a book deal. Hmmmm….

As someone with MS, this cynical opportunist is offensive. Her claims are utterly unconvincing, unproven, and irresponsible. I actually take the time to read the data behind various claims. But she doesn’t have even that. Someone else’s anecdotes won’t get me out of bed. It’s disheartening when medical doctors can’t do science.
