  It’s an awful lot of trouble for a sobriety rate no better than people getting sober without AA. A significant number of people “age out” of drink & drug around 30 without any treatment or AA or NA. Moreover, there are now modern treatment programs, with better than AA’s 5% success rate that are based in science, not faith & self flagellation.

  Does it work? Yes, indeed. Like going to the gym or studying a new language or learning how to run a marathon– IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT! As of April 2020, all this is–GASP!–proven by the most rigorously SCIENTIFIC analysis we have. The globally renowned Cochrane Collaboration which produces the ULTIMATE GOLD STANDARD reviews of scientific studies published the “shockingly” positive results for AA’s success in treating alcoholism–vastly higher than the “5%” false propoganda spread so widely among the less-informed on the internet. Also, this book is utterly fascinating for its story.
  Sadly for the terminally cynical, there is no such thing as a purely “scientific” cure for alcoholism. When one is discovered and proven, and thoroughly tested, that too will be examined in the Cochrane Collaborative process. Alas, there is also no “scientific method” for learning Arabic, for raising children, for practicing altruism, for finding love … and yet…
  I’ve been to AA meetings on four continents and over four decades. People changing using these simple tools and the changes are indeed miraculous.

  count marco, what about those who say they do not believe in any god(s) or supernatural higher powers? Still work for them?

  I doubt you could count since the agnostic and atheists sooner or later get unofficially pressured out of the program, which is nothing but poorly disguised christian temperance movement.

  Step 5 is more of that science you are talking about eh?

  AA is just one more American cult in a long long list of American cults going back since your cultist ancestors first moved in. America it self is a cult - gods chosen and manifest destiny..right?

  How many branches of Christianity have Americans invented?

  Mormonism is a very successful American invention/cult.

  Scientology is another very successful American invention/cult.

  How many cults from the hippy new age days?

  MAGA is another successful cult - they got hats-N-everything.

  America is the land of make believe and make believers.

  It would not surprise me at all if a clever American entrepreneur creates a Big Box store for all cult necessities & accessories.

  If you are part of that 5-10% then it worked and it saved your life. In over 30 years working in community mental health I have personally met countless people who owed their sobriety to AA. If it worked for you great! If not then keep searching (if you want a life free of ETOH and the complications it causes) for something that does work. 1 in 15 is better than 0 in 15.

  @apnea the Atlantic is not a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Can you provide any actual evidence that describes the methodology and findings that prove your assertions? (Hint: you can’t, because the Atlantic piece was not based on research carried out in AA, but on a “leaked” scrap of paper, which the authors have extrapolated from. There is no scientific basis for their article.)

  @apnea it’s also worth pointing out Dodes has published his own program for recovery from alcoholism. His long standing campaign against AA is based on his personal ambition to try grab a financial slice of the recovery industry. He’s not a nuteral scientist in this debate; he’s a salesman.
