the study you’re referring to (https://doi.org/10.7759/cureus.57472) has compared suicidality between transgender individuals who had undergone gender gender-affirming surgery with 3 control groups: a group of people who had not undergone any gender affirming surgery, a group of people who had undergone tubal ligation or vasectomy and no gender affirming surgery, and a group of people with pharyngitis.
The first major thing we need to notice is that there is no control group of specifically *transgender people* who had not undergone any gender affirming surgery, so this stat is not that helpful. It just compared the overall population with a specific section of the transgender population, so there’s no way to know certainly that the suicidality is caused *by* the gender affirming surgery itself. This becomes highly important considering that transgender people experience higher suicidality overall, as mentioned in many parts throughout the study and more specifically in the discussion section.
In that section, the study mentions that transgender people have an elevated risk of developing PTSD, which is heavily influenced by discrimination, interpersonal assault, a lack of social support, and other factors which serve as challenges for those seeking gender affirming surgery. The study also mentions that “The emergence of PTSD following surgery often stems from the pre-operative challenges (such as harassment, limited social support, etc.) in conjunction with suboptimal surgical outcomes and insufficient psychiatric assistance.”, I.e, not from the surgery itself but social factors as well as suboptimal results from surgeries, meaning the solution is to improve trans healthcare and making sure we get the appropriate support and remove any social barriers and discriminations we face.
Using a study that demonstrates a need for improvement in transgender related healthcare and social services to abolish said healthcare with the implication it’s “for our benefits” only hurts the people you’re supposedly “trying to protect”. Please consider the fact that gender affirming care improves the lives of transgender people and that we are not damaging society in any way by existing.
